Typography
Three cuts of two families. Headings are a true small-caps serif set solid; sub-headings drop to the same serif’s normal cut; everything else is one humanist sans. Body copy is 16px, which is small for a marketing site — the small caps above it are what make that feel deliberate rather than cramped.
44 / 44 — hero only
40 / 40 · ls 1px
30 / 30 — section sub-heads
24 / 28
20 / 30 · slate
Your college years are pivotal — the time to discover what you are for, and to be equipped well enough that the answer holds up afterwards.
16 / 24 · quill
The default for every paragraph. The measure caps at 660px, a little over 70 characters — a leading of 1.5 tolerates a longer line than a looser setting would.
13.6 / 20 · ls 1px, crimson
16 / 24 · uppercase
16 / 24 · ls 0.48px, ruled above
13 / 20 · quill
Crimson eyebrow, 16px down to the small-caps heading, 20px down to the lead. The eyebrow is one of only two places crimson sets type outside a link — the other is a figure numeral — and it is what tells you a new section has started when the ground has not changed.
A degree that travels well.
Sixty majors, one core curriculum, and a faculty who will still know your name in ten years.
- Headings are set solid at 44, 40 and the 32px mobile step; nothing above 30px gets extra leading.
- Write headings in sentence case — the small-caps cut does the capitalising, so typing in caps yields all-caps and breaks the effect.
- Spectral SC is for headings and the ruled text link. It never sets a paragraph.
- Body copy is quill, lead copy is slate. Do not use slate for both.
- Crimson sets type in exactly three places: a link, the 13.6px section eyebrow, and a figure numeral. Nowhere else, and never in running copy.
- Set text-wrap: pretty on every heading 24px and up.
